Taco baguette and pan-fried apples

IMAGE: Bergans / John Hobberstad

A superb two-course meal straight from the campfire.

Fancy a simple, quick and super-digg two-course meal right from the fire? Then we recommend this tasting duo of taco baguette and pan-fried apples.

The combo of spicy and sweet tastes makes this a tasteful meal at any campfire. Spice it up, or down, according to your likes. This recipe gives a medium spicy taste.

An important part of the joy here is to cook all the food outside. You may of course do some of the preparations at home to save time, anyhow we recommend you to stress down and do it all out in nature. Take your time and enjoy the cooking and the surroundings.

See tips on how to build a good food bonfire at the bottom of the article.

Main course: Taco baguette

Ingredients:
- Garlic buttered baguettes
- Grated cheese
- Minced meat
- Taco seasoning
- Tortilla chips
- Aluminum foil

How to do it:
Fry minced meat with taco seasoning in a frying pan. Cut the baguettes lengthwise, without cutting all the way through. Fill them with minced meat, cheese and crush tortilla chips over. Wrap in aluminum foil and bake it on indirect heat until the embers for 15-20 minutes. Remember to rotate it regularly to ensure evenly frying.

Dessert: Pan-fried apples

Ingredients:
- 2 apples
- Sugar
- Cinnamon
- Vanilla cream

How to do it:
Cut apples into pieces, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Fry in a pan over the fire until the apple pieces are golden. Serve with vanilla whipped cream.

TIP - How to build a good fire for cooking:

Find a flat surface and place some stones in a ring to prevent it from spreading. Start with two large blocks at about the same height at the bottom, then build up with two new blocks that you lay the opposite way. Use spark plugs or dry twigs to fire up from the top. Finish by placing 3 blocks on top of the flames. The fire will now burn down and thus takes longer to burn out at the same time as you have flat cubes to put the frying pan and the pan on.

ATTENTION: Remember the bonfire rules:

1. Use established campfire sites. Avoid unnecessary wear and tear on nature. Use the campfire sites again and again.

2. Respect the fire ban.
In Norway, there is a general ban on bonfires from 15 April to 15 September. You can still light a fire in approved campfires or in areas where it obviously can not cause a fire. In dry periods, you should absolutely avoid all use of open flame.

3. Do not damage healthy trees. You can use firewood that you find in nature, as long as there are dead trees and twigs you find on the ground.

4. Do not light a fire on bare rock. The heat from the fire can discolor and create permanent cracks in the rock.

5. Extinguish the fire before you go. Bonfires can heat deep into the ground. Be sure to extinguish the fire with plenty of water. In the worst case, the fire may flare up again later.

6. Ensure trackless traffic. Always carry a garbage bag that is large enough for your own garbage and what you find during the trip.

Have fun cooking!
