An intermediate layer is an insulating layer that is not worn directly against the skin and also does not form the outermost layer. The weather can change quickly, but having the right intermediate layer means you can easily remove a layer to regulate heat and ventilation. We have intermediate layers in fleece, wool and insulating jackets.
