  5. How to choose the right backpack – A complete guide

Choosing the right backpack is about more than volume. How much you carry, how long you’re out and the type of trip all determine what works best. This guide gives you a clear overview of how to choose based on weight, size and use.

At Bergans, we’ve been making backpacks since 1908. This summer, we believe we offer our most complete range yet. Here, we share our best advice to help you choose the right pack for your next trip.

Think about this first:
The size you need isn’t just about duration, but also weight. Even a short outing can require a lot of gear – for example, a family day out can mean a surprisingly large and heavy pack.

Our advice: Start with the type of trip, but always consider how much weight you’ll be carrying when choosing your backpack.

Heavy loads: 15 kg+ / 75 litres+

For heavier loads, you need a back system that provides stiffness and stability, so the weight doesn’t shift as you move. Your body uses a lot of energy compensating for a load that moves around. At the same time, it shouldn’t be so rigid that it restricts natural movement.

Look for a backpack that balances stability with freedom of movement. You’ll also need supportive shoulder straps and a solid hip belt to distribute weight across shoulders, back and hips.

A good technical pack lets you adjust the carry system on the move, allowing you to vary where the load sits.

A backpack for heavy loads (15 kg+) should offer a stable carry system that distributes weight efficiently across shoulders, back and hips.

Key features:
• Robust carry system for heavy loads
• Durable materials
• Multiple attachment points
• Good adjustment options

Medium loads: 8–15 kg / 20–70 litres

In this range, you need good support and stability without unnecessary weight or rigidity. The load is high enough to require close, controlled carry, but not so heavy that you need the most rugged systems. Balance is key. The pack should stabilise the load while still moving naturally with your body. Too much stiffness can feel restrictive, while too little support reduces comfort over time.

There’s wide variation here. Lighter packs (around 8 kg load) may have simpler systems and lower weight, while packs closer to 15 kg typically offer more structure, padding and adjustment. Look for a backpack that provides good load control, comfortable shoulder straps and a hip belt that transfers weight effectively to the hips, while remaining light and flexible.

A backpack for medium loads (8–15 kg) should offer support and stability while maintaining freedom of movement.

Key features:
• Good load capacity with low pack weight
• Adjustable carry system
• Multiple compartments and attachment points
• Hip belt that relieves the shoulders

Light loads: 1–8 kg / 5–20 litres

With lighter loads, the need for an advanced carry system is lower. Focus instead on low weight and functionality suited to your activity. A close, stable fit that moves naturally with your body is still important.

This category ranges from minimalist packs to more organised everyday options. Many are designed for specific activities such as running, cycling or skiing, while others suit work and leisure. At the lighter end, features like hydration compatibility, ventilated back panels or laptop compartments may be more important than carrying capacity.

A backpack for light loads (1–8 kg) should be lightweight, close-fitting and designed for the activity rather than advanced load systems.

Key features:
• Practical pockets for small items
• Ventilated back panels
• Versatile design

Find the right size and fit

Bodies vary, and whether you’re carrying light or heavy, short or long distances, you’ll get the most out of a pack that fits properly. That’s why many of our models come in sizes such as S/M and M/L, mainly differing in back length.

Take the time to find the right size and fit before deciding. Measure your back length and compare it with product details.

And always remember: test packs with weight inside!

FAQ Ryggsekk

How do I choose the right backpack?

Base your choice on how much you’ll carry and the type of trip. Weight and use are just as important as volume.

What matters for carrying comfort?

Good adjustment options make it easier to fit the pack to your body, which is key for comfort. The heavier the load, the more important a stable yet flexible carry system becomes.

What size backpack do I need?

It depends on the trip: • Day trips: approx. 1–40 litres • Multi-day, medium load: approx. 40–80 litres • Multi-day, heavy load: approx. 80–120 litres

How should the pack fit?

Det avhenger av turen, men er noen ca. tall: • Dagstur: ca. 1–40 liter • Flere dager med middels tung oppakning: ca. 40–80 liter • Flere dager med tung oppakning utstyr: ca. 80–120 liter

Do I need different packs for summer and winter?

Yes. Winter gear takes up more space, so consider a larger pack than you’d use in summer.

What features should I look for?

Practical details such as multiple pockets, wide openings, attachment points and back ventilation improve usability on the move.

What’s most important before buying a backpack?

Fit. A backpack that fits your body properly provides better comfort and reduces strain on your trip.

Can backpacks be washed?

Yes, backpacks can be washed. If you want to be on the safe side, we recommend washing by hand at a maximum of 30°C. Read more here: https://www.bergans.com/en/info/inspo/instructions/how-to-wash-backpacks
