  5. Our best tips for choosing a backpack for winter use

When choosing a backpack for winter trips, the most important advice is to select a pack with more volume than the one you use in summer. There are also several other details worth considering. Here are the key factors to keep in mind and what separates the needs for a day trips from longer journeys.

1. Volume / size

Winter gear takes up more space than summer equipment. Thicker clothing, extra fuel, skis, snowshoes, poles and possibly safety equipment all require additional volume. For winter use, we therefore recommend the following sizes:

Day trips: 25–40 litres is often sufficient
Multi-day trips: 60–90 litres, depending on trip length

It’s better to have a little extra space than a pack that has to be filled to the brim.

2. Carrying system and comfort

More gear means more weight on your back, making a solid carrying system essential. Look for:

  • Adjustable back length
  • A supportive hip belt that transfers weight to the hips
  • Enough stability and support to carry heavier loads

*Note: Always test the backpack with weight before heading out.*

3. Fit with winter clothing

Winter clothing is bulkier and affects how the backpack fits your body. Keep in mind to:

  • Ensure the hip belt and shoulder straps have ample adjustment range
  • Always adjust the backpack while wearing full winter clothing
  • Choose buckles and straps that are easy to use with thick gloves or mittens

4. Acess and organisation

In cold conditions, you want to avoid digging through your pack to find small items. Good organisation is therefore essential, and practical features really matter. Look for:

  • A top lid with easily accessible pockets
  • Front or side access for quick entry
  • Separate compartments and spacious pockets for wet and dry gear

For day trips, quick access to food and drink is key, while multi-day trips require access to all your gear and therefore require more structure.

5. Attachments and technical features

Winter trips often involve carrying extra gear on the outside of the pack. Look for:

  • Attachment points for skis or snowshoes
  • Options to secure ice axes or poles
  • Compression straps to keep the load stable

6. Durability and material choice

Winter conditions mean increased wear from skis, ice and hard surfaces. Choose a backpack made from durable materials that can withstand rough use over time.

Summary:

Choose a backpack with a bit of extra volume, a solid carrying system and winter-friendly features. This gives you better comfort, easier handling and more energy to enjoy the trip itself.
