Norwegians love hiking in the mountains, which often leads to crowded trails, especially during the summer months. Here are some alternative summer classics that offer fewer crowds but the same spectacular surroundings.

Alternative to Preikestolen: Bakken Farm and Hengjandenibbå.

Bakken Farm is located further into the Lysefjord from the Preikestolen Mountain Lodge. You can reach this idyllic farm by taking a fast boat to Bakken quay and then a 30-minute walk, either from Songesand (1 hour) or from Preikestolen Mountain Lodge (6–7 hours). A pleasant route is to take the boat in and hike back to Preikestolen Mountain Lodge. As you pass Hoppet, enjoy the fantastic view over the Lysefjord before possibly taking a detour to the miniature version of Preikestolen—Hengjandenibbå.

Alternative to Kjerag: Flørli Stairs.

In Flørli, by the Lysefjord, you'll find Norway's longest staircase with a stunning view over the fjord. The staircase consists of 4,444 steps and runs alongside the pipeline from Flørli power station to Ternevatn. It's 740 meters long and up to 45 degrees steep. For an extra special trip, consider visiting the new and spectacular tourist cabin called Skåpet. Flørli is more than just the stairs; it's a small community from the hydroelectric development era, complete with a café in the old power hall. Descending the Flørli stairs is not recommended, but there's a nice alternative route around. There is also a scheduled boat service to Flørli.

Alternative to Trolltunga: Kinsarvik – Stavali.

The hike from Husedalen to Stavali tourist cabin is a great alternative. It's most known for its spectacular waterfalls but also features green valleys and smooth rocks along the river, views of beautiful mountain areas, and wild nature. Among other sights, see the spectacular Søtefossen along the way and end the hike with a hot tub bath 1,024 meters above sea level. Stavali tourist cabin is a good starting point for further hikes into Hardangervidda.

Alternative to Romsdalseggen: Bispen or Kongen.

In Romsdalen, the mountains line up like pearls on a string. If you go to the top of Trollstigen, you can either follow the path out to the edge of Trollveggen or go the other way, into the mountain peaks Bispen or Kongen. Both hikes are quite steep, so you should be somewhat experienced and comfortable with heights. If you are, you can look forward to spectacular views.

Alternative to Besseggen: Bukkelægret.

Bukkelægret is a good alternative to Besseggen. The mountain is located on the T-marked trail between Gjendebu and Memurubu in central Jotunheimen and has a steep ascent from Gjendebu of about 500 meters up to the plateau at Memurutunga. From Memurutunga, the hike continues over Sjugurdtinden and down to Memurubu. The steepest parts are secured with chains and wires for assistance. Throughout the hike, you'll have a magnificent view over the western end of Lake Gjende, the Gjende water, and the mountains on the southern side.

Enjoy your summer hikes!
