The products. So far.

It’s not a collection – It’s far more

Yes, it is really tiny. No, we do not make money on it. Nevertheless, we believe that The Collection of Tomorrow is our most important project. How can we claim something like that? Have a look at the potential:

The Collection of Tomorrow represents a possible solution to close the gap that exist in a product’s life cycle – between recycling and production of new material – making it fully circular. We are not saying that we have reached the goal, but we are certainly taking steps to get there.

Instead of releasing many products at the same time, it is a sequential collection, where one product takes the place of the last. In 2019, it was a backpack, then came the shirt and now we are releasing an anorak… who knows what our next product will be.

The Collection of Tomorrow is simply a totally different way of thinking. We are challenging the way we make products and the way we sell and own products.

We believe it is needed if we are to face the future with our heads held high.

Collection of tomorrow x Danny Larsen

This fall, everyone who buys the anorak in the new color will receive a signed print with a Danny Larsen artwork with it.

We are proud to announce that we have brought artist Danny Larsen with us on this launch. Danny is a former professional snowboarder and passionate about sustainability and circularity.

– I love nature and do everything I can to ensure that my consumption affects mother earth in the smallest way possible. What I like about the The Collection Of Tomorrow is that it uncompromisingly strives to solve one of the biggest challenges of our time, which is how can we reduce our consumption of resources. It represents a totally new way of thinking, says Danny.

– When we see how the climate is screaming for a change, there is no doubt that we need a new way of doing things. We need to wake up!

– THE CONCEPT –

Challenging “ownership”

Just a few decades ago, owning many things was considered a good thing. Today it does not give the same status. Things are about to change.

It is a fact that our planet does not cope with the over-consumption that we in the Western world have maintained over the last 50 years or so. We are simply running out of resources. Ideally, we should probably stop consuming resources at all, but that would not be a good solution either. After all, the commercial structures are the mainstays of our society. We have to think new. Why not use the technology that our prosperity has given us to explore and find new ways to use the resources more efficiently?

A future way of owning

When you buy a The Collection of Tomorrow anorak, it is important that you understand what you actually are buying. Yes, you will own a really nice product, but you will also own a small part of the total amount of Spinnova material that exists in the world.

The value of the product is therefore divided in two; one part is the value of the work done to shape the material into a garment, and the other part is the value of the material itself.

Right now, the material is shaped like an anorak. But in the future, it can be recycled and become a completely different product.

When the product is no longer of use to you, the material still has its value.

How it works

There are 2 ways of purchasing a The Collection of Tomorrow product:

1. Purchase a current product in The Collection of Tomorrow.

Your payment covers the materials + the work done to make it into a product. The materials value for the anorak is 2000 NOK. The work value for the anorak is 1500 NOK.

– OR –

2. Swap your used The Collection of Tomorrow product for a new one.

The materials value is covered by handing in your product. The work value for the anorak is 1500 NOK which is what you pay. We will recycle your materials into the next generation of The Collection of Tomorrow products. Please contact our Customer Service if you want to use this option.

This is Spinnova

Spinnova is an innovative Finnish fibre producer with a mission to provide the textile industry with the most sustainable fiber in the world, produced with minimal harm to the environment, at a reasonable cost. Spinnovas innovative production technology for cellulose-based textile fibre has the potential to revolutionize the textile industry globally. Production processes of textile fibres from cellulose by using chemical processes have existed for some time. What makes Spinnovas patented process totally unique, is that it does not use any harmful chemicals, produce any waste or side streams and uses 99% less water than the cotton value chain. The material is also disruptively circular, and products made of it can be upcycled in our process several times, even without dismantling the product.

This is Halley Stevensons

Halley Stevensons is a world leading British fabric finisher, with a proud history and strong traditions. Their textile journey began as early as 1864 originating as a jute weaving mill as part of the industrial revolution. Innovation and product development have always been an important driver at Halley Stevensons. In fact, their first patent for 'cleaning and water-proofing textiles' was awarded as early as 1910, and they have kept innovating ever since. Halley Stevensons latest innovation, EverWax Olive, is applied on the bergans.future.labs 05.B Anorak. This an all-natural plant-based treatment using a blend of olive oil, rapeseed, and castor beans. The treatment makes the fabric more weather resistant and gives performance that is on a par with traditional paraffin-based waxes. All components are biodegradable and considered vegan friendly. Additionally, the fabric can be re-proofed, extending the lifespan of items made from it.

This is Bergans

Bergans of Norway has been driven by dedicated and passionate outdoor enthusiasts for over a century. We introduced and patented the backpack as we know it today, an invention famous polar explorers such as Amundsen and Scott recognized and used on their expeditions. Bergans still lives to let people experience the outdoors. Today and in the future. To ensure that the outdoors we have today will be there for the next generation to enjoy, Bergans is committed to step up their green efforts, by inspiring actions in their own operations and beyond. Bergans responsibility covers all from product development with design and material selection, production and transport, to the user phase and even further when a product gets repaired, resold, redesigned or recycled.

FAQ

What makes Spinnova so awesome?

Spinnova is the only company in the world able to convert paper grade pulp into textile fibre without harmful chemicals. The process is based on mechanical treatment of the pulp, as well as fibre suspension flows and rheology. Unlike all other cellulosic textile fibres, the Spinnova fibre’s chemical compound is the same as paper’s.

Why are not all Bergans products made with the Spinnova material?

Spinnova is not yet a commercially available fibre, but Spinnova works with the most sustainable, pioneering brands like Bergans, on prototyping while planning for commercialization. Bergans and Spinnova entered a long-term product development collaboration in the summer 2019. We have so far launched three products in The collection of tomorrow, it does not mean that we are on target. The material still has great development potentials, in fact we do not even know if we will achieve our goals. But we continue step by step, and have great faith that we will succeed. Our journey together will continue, and Spinnova is in the process of building its first commercial production facility that is estimated to be complete by the end of 2022.

Is the products made by pure Spinnova material?

Spinnova is working on potentially providing 100% SPINNOVA® materials in the future, meanwhile we use it in a blend with other materials, as is common in fabrics. So far, 30–40 % of the fabrics in the products we have released has been SPINNOVA® material. The other materials are all of natural origin; organic cotton, cellulose-based fibre Tencel, lamb wool or wood. There are no coating chemicals on the fabric or even plastic and metal accessories. The products therefore have the most minimal environmental footprint.

Is it really made of wood?

Yes, the raw material of our fibre is pulp that’s made of FSC certified wood. This is Spinnova’s spearhead at the moment, but we believe that almost any type of cellulose is equally suitable for this method. Spinnova are also looking into e.g. agricultural and bio waste-based cellulose. The pulp that comes into their process is mechanically refined into a very fine, paste-like material called micro fibrillated cellulose (MFC). MFC is a subsequent product of the pulping process. It has historically been produced on a small scale, for small volume products such as cosmetics.

What does FSC certified wood mean?

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), is a non-profit organization that sets certain high standards to make sure that forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible and socially beneficial manner. Wooden products labeled as "FSC Certified" are manufacturer in a way that met the requirements of the Forest Stewardship Council. The FSC certification is considered the "gold standard" designation for wood harvested from forests that are responsibly managed, socially beneficial, environmentally conscious, and economically viable.

Is Spinnova a man-made cellulosic?

No, the Spinnova process is not a regenerating process. It does not use dissolved pulp and there is no dissolving involved in any stage of the process. This also means that Spinnova don’t use any harmful chemicals. There are several fibre innovations out there that use dissolved pulp, but can avoid using harmful chemicals like sulfur, which is a step in the right direction.

Spinnova is not a man-made fibre, nor a biosynthetic. The chemical compound of this fibre is the same as paper’s, although the handfeel and mechanical properties are closest to cotton. Sound too amazing to be true? Well, it’s not.

Is it a nanocellulose / post-consumer waste circulating innovation?

No, the Spinnova fibre falls into natural fibre category (fibre generic class). Spinnova’s raw material is micro fibrillated cellulose, which means that the fibrils within the fibre are larger than in the nano level. Nanocellulose substance is gel-like, whereas micro fibrillated cellulose is more like a paste. Due to the different consistency, nanocellulose is used for applications such as biomedical solutions.

The fibre is in fact a circular product, as it can be ground back into the micro level and reused several times in our process. Reusing post-consumer fibre, even Spinnova fibre, in the Spinnova process is something we are now studying together with the Collection of Tomorrow.

Is it possible to buy a Spinnova x Bergans x Halley Stevensons products or get a sample of the material?

Yes, in a way. The fibre is not commercially available, but you are welcome to buy a shirt and become a Spinnova co-owner! The fibre is still in development and the Spinnova material only exist in a very limited amount, however we are eager to share it with you already – in return we want your feedback on how the material behave and perform. If you want to be amongst the very first few to experience a fully circular material, please place your order.

The road from this piloting phase to our vision, where products made of Spinnova fibre will be in shops everywhere is not as simple as one may think, but every decision Spinnova make is based on that vision and takes us closer to achieving it.

I did not get answer to my question, what do I do?

That’s a pity, send us an email (future.labs@bergans.com) and ask us. We will answer you as soon as we can. If you want to ask Spinnova a question, please email comms@spinnova.com.
