- How to wash down jackets?
Can down jackets be washed in a washing machine? And which program should you use? At Bergans, we often get questions about washing and caring for down jackets.
In this article, we guide you through the best way to wash a down jacket so that it keeps its shape and function. The main rule is to wash your down jacket as little as possible. If it has a strong odor, such as smoke from a campfire, good airing is often enough to remove the smell. If it’s dirty, you can easily wash it yourself so that it’s fresh and ready for the next time you use it. Here’s the best method for washing your down jacket in the washing machine.
How to wash a down jacket in the washing machine
- Check the care label for important washing instructions
- Loosen drawstrings, close all zippers and Velcro fasteners, and empty all pockets
- If there are stains, it can help to soak the jacket in cold water for 15 minutes first
- Turn the jacket inside out and place it in the washing machine
- Use a mild detergent (such as for wool), about 1/3 of a cap for one jacket, and choose a gentle wash cycle with a low temperature (according to the care label) and a low spin speed
- Do not use fabric softener – it is unnecessary and can cause the down to clump together
- When the wash is finished, run an extra rinse cycle to remove all detergent residues
- After washing, hang the jacket to drip dry. When it is almost dry, place it in the tumble dryer together with 4–5 tennis balls or dryer balls. Use a low heat setting and remove the jacket when it is completely dry. During the drying process, you can take it out a few times and shake it gently
- Finally, hang the jacket up for a last airing and shake and pat it to evenly distribute the down
- Turn the jacket right side out again
We hope this helps you take good care of your down jacket. With the right product care, your down jacket will continue to keep you warm and comfortable for many cold seasons to come. Good for you and the environment!
