It’s not a collection – It’s far more

Yes, it is really tiny. No, we do not make money on it. Nevertheless, we believe that The Collection of Tomorrow is our most important project. How can we claim something like that? Have a look at the potential:

The Collection of Tomorrow represents a possible solution to close the gap that exist in a product’s life cycle – between recycling and production of new material – making it fully circular. We are not saying that we have reached the goal, but we are certainly taking steps to get there.

Instead of releasing many products at the same time, it is a sequential collection, where one product takes the place of the last. In 2019, it was a backpack, then came the shirt and now we are releasing an anorak… who knows what our next product will be.

The Collection of Tomorrow is simply a totally different way of thinking. We are challenging the way we make products and the way we sell and own products.

We believe it is needed if we are to face the future with our heads held high.

A future way of owning

When you buy a Spinnova x Bergans anorak, it is important that you understand what you actually are buying. Yes, you will own a really nice product, but you will also own a small part of the total amount of Spinnova material that exists in the world.

The value of the product is therefore divided in two; one part is the value of the work done to shape the material into a garment, and the other part is the value of the material itself. Right now, the material is shaped like an anorak. But in the future, it can be recycled and become a completely different product.

When the product is no longer of use to you, the material still has its value.

Bergans and Spinnova are working together on a long-term product development collaboration. Spinnova’s pure tech

Spinnova’s innovative production technology for cellulose-based textile fibre has the potential to revolutionize the textile industry globally. Production processes of textile fibres from cellulose by using chemical processes have existed for some time. What makes Spinnova’s patented process totally unique, is that it does not use any harmful chemicals, produce any waste or side streams and uses 99% less water and significantly less CO2 emissions than the cotton value chain. The material is also disruptively circular, and products made of it can be upcycled in our process several times, even without dismantling the product.

This is Halley Stevensons

Halley Stevensons is a world leading British fabric finisher, with a proud history and strong traditions. Their textile journey began as early as 1864 (56 years before Bergans was founded!) originating as a jute weaving mill as part of the industrial revolution. Just like at Bergans, innovation and product development have always been an important driver at Halley Stevensons. In fact, their first patent for 'cleaning and water-proofing textiles' was awarded as early as 1910, and they have kept innovating ever since. In other words, the Halley Stevensons, Bergans and Spinnova collaboration amounts to 286 years of innovation and determination driven by a genuine joy in developing tomorrow's textile materials.

Halley Stevensons latest innovation, EverWax Olive, is applied on the bergans.future.labs 05.B Anorak. This an all-natural plant-based treatment using a blend of olive oil, rapeseed, and castor beans. The treatment makes the fabric more weather resistant and gives performance that is on a par with traditional paraffin-based waxes. All components are biodegradable and considered vegan friendly. Additionally, the fabric can be re-proofed, extending the lifespan of items made from it.

Why buy?

The Collection of Tomorrow is a project that explores the possibilities that lie in innovative technology and how it can take us closer to a fully circular consumption of textiles.

When you buy a Spinnova x Bergans shirt, it is important that you understand what you actually are buying. Yes, you will own a really nice handmade shirt, but you will also own a small part of the total amount of Spinnova material that exists in the world. The value of the product is therefore divided in two; one part is the value of the work done to shape the material into a garment, and the other part is the value of the material itself. Right now, the material is shaped like a shirt but in the future, it can be recycled and become a completely different product.

A future scenario

Our prediction about the future is that we will not own finished products to the same extent as today. With technologies like Spinnova's, we can rather own a share out of the total amount of material. Imagine that you have a winter jacket that is worn out. When spring comes, you hand it in for recycling and then decide which model you wish for next winter. Your old jacket is then thrown in a large grinder with many other jackets and recycled into new fabric, which is used to sew your new winter jacket. When the autumn comes, you will receive your new jacket and only pay for the recycling and sewing job. Congratulations on your "new" jacket!

What makes Spinnova so awesome?


Spinnova are the only company in the world able to convert paper grade pulp into textile fibre without harmful chemicals. The process is based on mechanical treatment of the pulp, as well as fibre suspension flows and rheology. Unlike all other cellulosic textile fibres, the Spinnova fibre’s chemical compound is the same as paper’s.

Why are not all Bergans products made with the Spinnova material?


Spinnova is not yet a commercially available fibre, but Spinnova works with the most sustainable, pioneering brands like Bergans, on prototyping while planning for commercialization. Bergans and Spinnova entered a long-term product development collaboration in the summer 2019. Although we are now announcing our collaboration and launching our innovation project The collection of tomorrow, it does not mean that we are on target. The material is not fully developed, in fact we do not even know if we will reach our goals. But we are willing to try and have great faith that we will succeed. This is the real start of our journey together.

Are the products made by pure Spinnova material?


At this point in the development the Spinnova fiber is still not strong enough to make products exclusively with this material, but we are working on it. The prototype backpack is a blend with other materials, where 50% of it is Spinnova material. The other materials are all of natural origin; cellulose-based fibre lyocell, lamb wool and wood. There are no coating chemicals on the fabric or even plastic and metal accessories. The backpack therefore has the most minimal environmental footprint.

Is it really made of wood?


Yes, the raw material of our fibre is pulp that’s made of FSC certified wood. This is Spinnova’s spearhead at the moment, but we believe that almost any type of cellulose is equally suitable for this method. Spinnova are also looking into e.g. agricultural and bio waste-based cellulose. The pulp that comes into their process is mechanically refined into a very fine, paste-like material called micro fibrillated cellulose (MFC). MFC is a subsequent product of the pulping process. It has historically been produced on a small scale, for small volume products such as cosmetics.

What does FSC certified wood mean?


The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), is a non-profit organization that sets certain high standards to make sure that forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible and socially beneficial manner. Wooden products labeled as "FSC Certified" are manufacturer in a way that met the requirements of the Forest Stewardship Council. The FSC certification is considered the "gold standard" designation for wood harvested from forests that are responsibly managed, socially beneficial, environmentally conscious, and economically viable.

Is Spinnova a man-made cellulosic?


No, the Spinnova process is not a regenerating process. It does not use dissolved pulp and there is no dissolving involved in any stage of the process. This also means that Spinnova don’t use any harmful chemicals. There are several fibre innovations out there that use dissolved pulp, but can avoid using harmful chemicals like sulfur, which is a step in the right direction.
Spinnova is not a man-made fibre, nor a biosynthetic. The chemical compound of this fibre is the same as paper’s, although the handfeel and mechanical properties are closest to cotton. Sound too amazing to be true? Well, it’s not.

Is it a nanocellulose / post-consumer waste circulating innovation?


No, the Spinnova fibre falls into natural fibre category (fibre generic class). Spinnova’s raw material is micro fibrillated cellulose, which means that the fibrils within the fibre are larger than in the nano level. Nanocellulose substance is gel-like, whereas micro fibrillated cellulose is more like a paste. Due to the different consistency, nanocellulose is used for applications such as biomedical solutions.
The fibre is in fact a circular product, as it can be ground back into the micro level and reused several times in our process. Reusing post-consumer fibre, even Spinnova fibre, in the Spinnova process is something we are now studying together with the Collection of Tomorrow.

Is it possible to receive a sample of the material?


The fibres are made at Spinnova’s laboratory/ pilot factory and material is very scarce at this time. There is no commercially available material, but Spinnova and Bergans are working very hard to reach this goal. When will you launch the next product in The Collection of Tomorrow?


That depends on our progress in further developing the technology, the fibre and the material(s) made from it. The next product will push the everything one step further, but as with all innovation we cannot guarantee the timeframe. Our plan is 2nd half of 2020.
