ecodear® – Partially plant based Polyester

Bergans lives for the great outdoors. To enable future generations to enjoy the outdoors as we do today we must end dependency of fossil resources such as oil. ecodear® partially plant based Polyester is a good example for Being innovative and trying new paths.

In 2016 we are together with our partner TORAY introducing products made of ecodear®; a partially plant-based polyester. Polyester is conventionally made from 100 % crude oil. In ecodear®, the ethylene glycol needed in the polymerization is instead made from molasses, a bi-product of sugar production. Chemically ecodear® is just like conventional polyester and is therefore fully recyclable.

RDS – Responsible Down Standard

Down is a unique material. It keeps heat, transpires well, is light weight and has a long life. Bergans selects only the best quality down in our products – to keep you warm, season after season. High quality and responsible production is part of the sustainability promise we make for all Bergans’ products.

In down production, we have worked for a long time to ensure animals are treated in a humane way and guarantee that practices such as live-plucking or force feeding does not take place and the down is a bi-product from food production.

From 2016 we further strengthen our work by making all Bergans’ down products only contain down that is certified according to the strict requirements of the Responsible Down Standard.

This means every step in the supply chain is audited, from the farms to our warehouse, giving full traceability of where the down comes from.

We want our customers to feel secure that our products will keep them warm AND that they have been produced in an ethical way.

Merinowool

Our superior quality merino wool is sourced from carefully selected producers. Because we use the finest and softest wool fibers, our products are extremely soft and comfortable. Merino wool is also a renewable resource which is highly durable and biodegradable.

  • Regulates temperature – provides great insulation in the cold, but has a cooling effect when it's hot.

  • Lightweight and comfortable.

  • Good wicking ability.

  • Absorbs moisture – absorbs up to 30 % of its own weight. It takes longer before the garment feels damp against the skin. At the same time, it provides great insulation, and feels warm and dry.

  • Repels dirt and grime and perspiration odors – garments made from 100 % merino wool can be worn for longer without needing to be washed.

  • Machine-washable.

  • What does "micron" mean?
Micron is a scale that describes the fineness and softness of wool fibers. Micron values of less than 19 are regarded as fine wool. The lower the micron value, the less itchy the wool.

  • Guaranteed mulesing-free!

  • We guarantee that the merino wool we use is sourced from sheep that have NOT been subjected to mulesing. Learn more at www.bergans.com

  • Sun protection = 25+

Merino wool fibers absorb harmful radiation and protect against UVA and UVB rays.

BLUESIGN®

Bergans is a bluesign® system partner. bluesign® system works to promote sustainable textile production.

The bluesign® system works to promote sustainable textile production, through ensuring the highest level of consumer safety, minimal impact on people and the environment and a responsible use of resources. When choosing a bluesign® certified material we are confident that it meets our stringent standards for health, safety and environment.

The bluesign® standard aims to remove substances that are potentially dangerous to health or the environment from the entire textile production chain - from yarn, dyes and additives to finished materials. In addition to the fabric itself being free from harmful chemicals in accordance with the Restricted Substance List (RSL), emissions to water, land and air is minimized; consumption of resources such as water and electricity are reduced; and working conditions in factories are correct according to health and safety.

One main objective for Bergans is that 75% of all our products will be bluesign® approved by the end of 2020.

Repreve® polyester has the same properties and appearance as ordinary polyester, but it is more environmentally-friendly.

The difference between ordinary recycled polyester and Repreve® recycled polyester is that Repreve® is traceable. Every single fiber has a signature called Fiberprint™, which verifies the Repreve® content in respect of quantity and certification.

We use Repreve® polyester in our T-shirts, Sira pants and shorts. Soft, comfortable garments which are helping to make a difference. Look for the Repreve® logo.

RECCO®

RECCO® is a maintenance-free reflector which helps search and rescue crews during searches for people who have been caught in an avalanche. At Bergans we have chosen to sew in a RECCO® search reflector in some of our products. This neither guarantees that you will be found, nor that you will not be caught in an avalanche. But where a RECCO® searcher is in place, the reflector on the garments can be of good help for search and rescue crews. The RECCO® reflector is maintenance-free and does not require activation. It functions as a transporter of radio waves, cannot activate alarm systems, and will not be destroyed by de-magnetization.

TENCEL®

TENCEL® is a lyocell fiber, the most environmental friendly viscose fiber. It is of botanic origin, extracted from the raw material wood, and has less environmental impact than cotton.

The unique closed loop process makes TENCEL® the fiber of the future since the solvent used is recycled by almost 100% in the closed loop process. This special process received the "European Award for the Environment" from the European Union. Another ecological advantage of TENCEL® is that the raw material wood stems from forest plantations which practice sustainability, where the cultivated forest land is not suitable for agriculture.

Textiles of TENCEL® feels more absorbent than cotton, softer than silk and cooler than linen.

RECYCLED POLYESTER

The most common raw material of recycled polyester are used plastic bottles and waste material from textile production.

We work to ensure that as many of our products as possible comprise recycled materials and currently use different types of recycled polyester in products such as T-shirts, fleece and softshell garments.

Analyses we have commissioned from an independent environmental consultant show that recycled polyester has a markedly lower environmental and climatic impact than new polyester. Here are two examples:

– Softshell pants containing 74% recycled polyester have a 65% lower environmental impact than pants made from new polyester.

– A T-shirt made from 85% recycled polyester derived from recycled plastic bottles has a 77% lower environmental impact than a T-shirt made from organic cotton.
