Carrying Systems

Whether you are planning a daytrip to the mountains, a weekend away or longer expeditions, it is important to choose the right carrying system to have a comfortable backpack. Bergans has a wide range of rucksacks to suit various requirements.

The carrying system is the heart of the rucksack. When choosing a rucksack, it is very important to consider carrying requirements and personal anatomy. For the sake of simplicity, we use body height as an indication, but back length and shoulder width are also decisive factors.

Before purchasing a rucksack you should define the area of use – ask yourself what you intend to use the rucksack for: day trips, long hikes with heavy loads, climbing, or 150 meters from the car to the cabin twice a year? Bergans has developed several different carrying systems for different needs.

All our rucksacks have been produced using fabrics that are very resistant to wear and tear. The fabric used for rucksacks is lined with PU internally, which makes them very water-resistant. Many of our models come with rain covers, but you can buy this separately if the rucksack doesn’t have an integrated one.

Most of our large and medium-sized rucksacks have separate models for men and women.

This is how Bergans’ rucksacks for women differ from the models for men:
• The back is shorter and narrower
• The shoulder straps are narrower and closer together, which makes them fit better to narrow female shoulders and prevents the straps from sliding off.
• The shoulder straps are shorter.
• The hip belt is adapted to the female anatomy, i.e. it is more conical and angled.
• The adjustable shoulder strap is located higher up to make it more comfortable in the chest area.

Anatomic rucksacks place higher demands on correct packing – it is important that everything is packed tightly in a stable manner, as the packing forms part of the rucksack’s rigidity.

In general, all anatomic rucksacks should fulfil the following requirements:
• Individual adjustment to the wearer’s back.
• Fitting closer to the back, which improves stability and comfort.

Anatomic rucksacks from 50 litres / loads up to 25 kg must at least have the following features:
• Aluminium stays that can be shaped to the wearer’s back.
• Individually adjustable shoulder straps with stabilising straps. This makes it possible to correct for any imbalances in the back.
• Shaped hip belt with stabilising straps.
• The top of the rucksack is stiffened to prevent it from becoming round in shape.
• Compression straps, ideally 3 on either side.

In addition to the above, anatomical rucksack from 80 litres / loads above 25 kg should also have:
• Additional stiffening to improve weight control.
• Additional stiffening in the hip belt.
• More stiffening in the back than what is achieved with just one or two aluminium stays.

Packing frame rucksacks are characterised by the following:
• Fewer demands to how the rucksack is packed.
• The frame can be used to carry crates etc.
• The construction is so stiff that it doesn’t break down even under extreme loads.
• Some constructions can appear stiff to the back and limit movements.

Packing frame rucksacks from 80 litres / loads above 30 kg
In addition to the points listed under anatomical rucksacks, packing frame rucksacks must be constructed to bring the point of gravity closer to the body, i.e. the carrying system must be inside the actual frame.
